How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business

You cannot buy a place in an AI answer; the engine assembles it from sources it can crawl and corroborate: your own site, your Google Business Profile, directories, and third-party pages describing what you do in plain words. The practical job is to make one consistent, machine-readable description of your business exist in several places the engine already trusts.

Why can't you pay your way into the answer?

There is no slot to buy. The engine retrieves a handful of documents it can reach and writes a reply out of them. Your only lever is being one of them, and being the clearest.

The stakes, dated

A G2 survey run in March 2026 found 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research with an AI chatbot, against 29% in April 2025, G2 runs a software review marketplace, so read it as directional. Semrush's March to April 2026 survey of US buyers reported 92% say AI research shapes their shortlist.

What a citation is worth

Presence in a shortlist, not a traffic faucet. Cloudflare's June 2025 figures put the ratio of pages crawled to visits referred back at roughly 1,700 to 1 for OpenAI. It matters for where it sits in the decision, not for clicks.

The work

Which four surfaces does the engine actually read?

Every recommendation is stitched together from pages. Four kinds decide whether yours are in the stitch.

The four surfaces, what each one gives the engine, how to check it
Surface What the engine takes from it How you check it yourself
Your own site What you do, for whom, where, at what price, in raw HTML. The only surface you control. Run curl -s https://yoursite.com | sed 's/<[^>]*>//g'. That is your page, as a bot sees it.
Google Business Profile Your entity record as Google holds it: name, primary category, service area, hours, services. Facts, not prose. Compare every field, word for word, with the same claim on your site.
Directories and marketplaces Corroboration. A second and third source saying the same thing turns a claim into a fact the engine repeats. Search your name; make sure no stale listing contradicts the current one.
Third-party pages Where the engines already go. Profound's analysis of 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 found Wikipedia alone accounted for 7.8% of all ChatGPT citations and Reddit for 6.6% of Perplexity's; Semrush, across 230,000 prompts between 14 July and 12 October 2025, found LinkedIn the most-cited domain in Google's AI Mode. A signed, useful answer there gets picked up before a new site does.

Consistency

What has to be identical across all four?

Engines corroborate. When two sources disagree about you, the safest thing a model can do is name someone else. Five fields do most of the damage.

01

One business name, spelled one way

Not the legal entity here and the trading name there. Pick the one buyers type, punctuation included.

02

One primary category

Your Google Business Profile category and your homepage's first line should describe the same business. Agency here, consultancy there, and you have taught the engine to hesitate.

03

One services list, in the same words

Reuse the exact wording everywhere. The engine matches strings, not intent.

04

One service area, one URL

National, regional or local, decide, say it the same way everywhere, and point every profile at the same canonical address.

05

Facts that can be quoted

Published prices, exact scope, dates, work delivered. A price is citable; “industry-leading” is not.

On your own pages

What makes a sentence worth lifting?

One recipe here was tested under controlled conditions and published in a peer-reviewed venue, not asserted on a blog.

What the study found

Aggarwal and colleagues, in “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” at ACM SIGKDD 2024, benchmarked 10,000 queries and reported that their top-performing methods, Cite Sources, Quotation Addition and Statistics Addition, gained 30 to 40% on the position-adjusted word count metric. In plain terms: cite sources, quote named people, use numbers with provenance.

What the same study found does not work

Keyword stuffing scored worse than the untouched original in the same 2024 benchmark. So does the narrative warm-up: engines take the answer and skip the run-up. Answer in the first 40 to 60 words, then give the evidence.

This article opens with a 60-word answer for that reason. A method we will not apply to our own page is not one we can sell you.

What to skip

What is being oversold to you right now?

01

llms.txt

Google's John Mueller wrote on Bluesky in June 2025 that “no AI system currently uses llms.txt”. It takes ten minutes and does no harm, but it should never appear on an invoice.

02

Schema markup sold as a citation lever

Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD against matched controls and published the result in May 2026: +2.4% citations in Google's AI Mode, +2.2% in ChatGPT, neither significant, and −4.6% in AI Overviews. Mark up for rich results, not as a way in.

03

A special AI markup

Google's documentation states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special structured data to add.

Afterwards

How do you check whether it worked?

Three checks, none of which requires buying an AI visibility score.

01

Count the bots in your server logs

GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Googlebot all identify themselves, so their weekly hit count is the one before-and-after nobody can spin. Watch status codes: on our own site, on 23 September 2026, GPTBot got a 429 three tries out of three while a browser got a 200.

02

Ask the buyer's question, not your name

“Who should I hire for X in Y” is the prompt that counts. Your brand name tells you nothing: the engine finds you either way.

03

Test more than ChatGPT

Similarweb, on a page published 29 July 2026, put generative AI platforms at about 9.5 billion visits a month, up roughly 70% in a year, with ChatGPT's share falling from 76% to 53% while Gemini's rose from about 9% to 28%. There is no single engine left to optimize for.

What we will not tell you is when a given engine re-crawls you. Nobody outside those companies knows, and a date is the easiest thing to promise and the hardest to keep.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can I pay to have ChatGPT recommend my business?

No. There is no ad slot inside the answer. The engine retrieves documents it can crawl, then writes a reply from them, so the only way in is to be one of those documents and the clearest thing in the set. A placement in an AI answer is not a thing anyone can sell.

Does ChatGPT read my website as it looks in my browser?

No. Vercel measured crawler traffic across its network in December 2024 and reported that none of the major AI crawlers render JavaScript. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot read the raw HTML. If your text only appears after a script runs, they see an empty document, however good the page looks in Chrome.

How long does it take before an answer engine picks up a change?

It depends on when each engine next crawls you, and nobody outside those companies controls that. The fix is live the day it ships, it reaches an engine when that engine re-crawls the page, and your server logs tell you the date it happened. Any agency promising a specific date is guessing.

Do I need customer reviews before an AI will recommend me?

Genuine reviews are one kind of third-party corroboration and they help. Invented ones are illegal: the FTC rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, 16 CFR Part 465, has been in force since 21 October 2024. Until you have real ones, publish facts an engine can quote instead: prices, scope, dates, work delivered.
