What a B2B SEO audit is, and what it actually finds

A B2B SEO audit is a written inspection of what search engines and AI assistants can actually read on your site. It reports the HTTP status and readable word count each crawler receives, the buyer questions you rank for and the ones you miss, what competitors get cited for, and the three fixes worth doing first.

In writing. No call required. Last updated 23 September 2026.

sample report · bva.marketing · 23 sep 2026
Googlebot 200 · empty body
GPTBot 429 · 3 of 3 tries
PerplexityBot 200 · empty body
ClaudeBot 200 · empty body
robots.txt missing
sitemap.xml missing

This is a real page of a real report, ours, before we rebuilt this site. The homepage returned 439 bytes with an empty body of readable text, no h1 and no meta description, and OpenAI's crawler was turned away at the door. You get the same six lines on your domain.

The deliverable

Five sections. No slides, no score out of 100.

You get a written document with the raw readings in it, so you can hand it to any developer and they can reproduce every line. Here is what is in it, in order.

01

What each crawler gets: status code and word count

We fetch your pages as Googlebot, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot, with no browser and no JavaScript, and record the HTTP status, the number of readable words, and whether a title, a meta description, an h1 and structured data are present in the raw HTML. This matters because, in Vercel's December 2024 measurement of AI crawler traffic across its network, none of the major AI crawlers rendered JavaScript, they download your script files and never execute them. A site built in the browser is an empty page to them.

02

Whether the answer engines are allowed in at all

Your robots.txt and sitemap.xml, checked for existence, content type and what they actually permit, crawler by crawler. OpenAI's own bot documentation states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", and Perplexity asks publishers to allow PerplexityBot to appear in its results. Blocking or rate-limiting is often a hosting default nobody chose, which is exactly what we found on our own site.

03

The buyer questions you show up for, and the ones you miss

We write down 20 to 30 questions your buyers actually type, then run every one in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI mode on a stated date, and record whether you are named. You get the exact prompts, so you can re-run them yourself next month. In G2's March 2026 survey of B2B software buyers, 51% said they now start their research with an AI chatbot, against 29% in April 2025, which is why this section exists at all.

04

What your competitors are being cited for

For each question where someone else is named, we record who, and what kind of page won the citation: a documentation page, a comparison, a directory listing, a forum thread. That tells you where to spend before writing anything. Profound's analysis of 680 million citations between August 2024 and June 2025 found Wikipedia alone accounted for 7.8% of ChatGPT's citations and Reddit 6.6% of Perplexity's, the sources these engines reach for are few, and they are knowable.

05

Three fixes, ranked, with the file to change

Not forty findings. Three, in the order that moves the most, each with what to change, who on your side can do it, and how to check it is done. Usually one is technical, one is a page that needs its answer in the first fifty words, and one is a listing or profile that contradicts the others. In the controlled study behind that format, Aggarwal et al., "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", KDD 2024, a benchmark of 10,000 queries, citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics raised visibility in generated answers by 30 to 40% on the study's position-adjusted word count metric, while keyword stuffing made it worse.

How the reading is taken

One command you can run yourself.

There is nothing proprietary about the first section of the audit. This is the test, and it takes two minutes on your own machine.

The two-minute version

curl -s https://yoursite.com | sed 's/<[^>]*>//g' | wc -w

That strips the tags and counts the words a crawler without a browser can read. If the number is close to zero, every answer engine sees the same nothing, however good the site looks in Chrome. Then open yoursite.com/robots.txt and yoursite.com/sitemap.xml and check that a real file comes back, not your homepage.

What we add on top

The same fetch repeated with each crawler's real user agent, three times each, because rate limits only show up on repetition, that is how the 429 served to GPTBot on our own site was caught. Then the questions, run by hand in each engine and dated. Then the fix list. Every reading in the report carries the date and the exact command or prompt that produced it.

Why the raw HTML is the whole game

Googlebot renders JavaScript. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot read the HTML your server sends and stop there, per Vercel's December 2024 measurement. So the test that matters is the one without a browser, view source, not the inspector, which shows you the page after your scripts have already run.

Price and delivery

$497, once. Or nothing, for the short version.

Both come in writing. Neither requires a call, and you keep the document either way.

This is the Starter plan on the pricing page. It is a closed-scope diagnostic, not a retainer: nothing renews, and nothing is charged again unless you ask for Growth.

The free short audit

Send the URL through the form at the bottom of this page and you get, usually within two business days: the status code and readable word count for each crawler, whether your robots.txt and sitemap.xml are real files, and whether your homepage has a title, a meta description and an h1 in the raw HTML. That is the first section of the paid audit, run on your homepage only.

It is free because it is the part we have automated, and because it is the part that decides whether the rest is worth paying for. If the short audit comes back clean, we will say so, and you will not need us for the technical work.

No money-back guarantee, here or anywhere on this site. What we commit to is delivery: the document, on the date said above, with the readings reproducible line by line. What happens next inside Google or ChatGPT is not ours to promise, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What this is not

Three things we will not sell you.

01

An llms.txt file, billed as a lever

Google's John Mueller wrote in June 2025 that no AI system currently uses llms.txt. The file takes ten minutes and does no harm, so we will put one there if you want it. It will never appear on an invoice.

02

Structured data sold as AI citations

We add schema markup, because it helps Google understand the entity and it earns rich results. But Google's own documentation says there is no special structured data needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Ahrefs' May 2026 controlled test of 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD measured gains of about two percent in Google AI Mode and ChatGPT that were not statistically significant, plus a small drop in AI Overviews.

03

A visibility score out of 100

Composite scores hide the reading that produced them. You get the readings: status codes, word counts, dated prompts and their answers. Anything you cannot re-run yourself is not evidence, it is decoration.

One more piece of context worth having before you buy anything: Pew Research Center found in July 2025 that Google users clicked a result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary itself on 1% of visits. The audit is about being named in the answer, not about the click that used to follow it.

Questions

Straight answers.

How much does a B2B SEO audit cost?

The full audit is $497, one time, and it is the first part of the Starter plan. A short version, covering the status code and readable word count each crawler gets plus your robots.txt and sitemap, is free and also comes in writing.

How long does the audit take?

The free short audit goes out in writing, usually within two business days. The full $497 audit is delivered within two weeks of you sending the URL. Both arrive as a document you keep, whether or not we work together afterwards.

Do I have to get on a call to get the audit?

No. You send the URL, we send the findings in writing. If you want to talk after reading them, we talk. Nothing is gated behind a call, and nobody will chase you.

What do you need from me to run it?

The URL. Read access to Google Search Console and your analytics makes the report sharper and we will ask for it, but every crawler reading and every citation check is run from outside your site, so nothing is blocked while you look for a password.

Will the audit tell me when I will rank or get cited?

No, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. We can date the fixes and the day each crawler next reads the fixed page, because both are in the server logs. When a search engine re-ranks you, or an assistant starts naming you, is not ours to promise.
